Power wheel chairs: Things to know strong wheels, quite & narrow design

Have you ever wondered why and who needs to use wheel chairs? Have you ever wondered which wheel chair would be right for them? There are two options when choosing a wheel chair: standard wheel chairs or power wheel chairs.

 

Those who have been in a terrible car accidents and those who have been stricken with very severe medical issues such as polio, arthritis, or MS patients who have lost all or certain feeling in their lower extremities. Patients who have been left without the possibility of walking around on their own will need a wheel chair. Being in a wheel chair doesn’t mean your life has to stop. A wheel chair can offer assistance to maintain their regular life and keep their lives as normal as possible. This then begs the question of which will give the best assistance, a standard or power wheel chair?

Standard Wheel Chairs-

Standard wheel chairs are most usually found in clinics or hospitals and are manual. They are typically used by the seated person pushing themselves and maneuvering on their own will by using their arms. Standard wheel chairs can also be used by someone else pushing it by the handles behind them. These are generally a very low-cost option for people to purchase. They are however, the least favorable to be utilize by the seated person.

Having a great deal of upper body strength from the seated man or women is extremely necessary for this type of wheel chair to be considered. The manual function offered can be extremely trying on the seated person if they are not strong enough.  Patience that have been diagnosed with arthritis will not be able to use this type of wheel chair due to their increased level of pain. It will be much too hard on their hands and arms leaving them with not only injured legs and feet. Standard chairs are a lot larger then most people initially believe. This makes it much harder to maneuver around corners and sharp turns.

Power Wheel Chairs-

Power wheelchairs are known to be much easier to use when being compared to standard wheel chairs. These power wheel chairs are completely battery functioned, so no more pushing or being pushed. They are controlled by using a control stick that has been placed on the end of the arm of the chair. The seat of the chair also offers much more cushion for a softer, more comfortable ride. Some companies also provide attached footrests and headrests to the wheel chair.

These chairs and Mobility Scooters give the seated person much more freedom and mobility then standard wheel chairs. Shaper and easier turns around corners are also given due to their much smaller build. The joystick offers much more precise and smoother rides.

They are built to last a very long time which allows individuals to use them inside and outside. Of all the great qualities given by choosing a power wheel chair there is only one downside to them. The cost of a power chair succeeds that of any standard wheel chair, however, insurance companies will cover all or a least a portion of the cost.

The type of wheel chair necessary for someone is ultimately dependant on the persons, reason why they might need a wheel chair and where they live.
